Smoked Salmon Bagel
Smoked salmon bagel with red onion, full-fat cream cheese, fresh dill and lemon. Classic New York-style preparation serving four.

Heat the oven to 200 °C so it is ready to toast the bagels.

Slice each bagel in half horizontally with a bread knife, cutting all the way through.

Lay the bagel halves cut-side up on the baking tray in a single layer.

Slide the loaded baking tray into the oven.



Toast the bagels in the oven until the cut faces are golden and crisp.


Lift the tray out of the oven using oven gloves and set it on the counter.



Peel away the papery skin of the red onion and discard it.

Slice the peeled onion as thinly as possible into half-moon rings.


Finely grate the zest of the lemon into a small bowl, stopping before you reach the white pith.

Halve the zested lemon and squeeze its juice into the same small bowl, catching any pips.


Spoon the cream cheese into a medium bowl.

Season the cream cheese with a pinch of ground black pepper.

Pour the lemon juice and zest into the cream cheese.

Stir everything together until the cream cheese is smooth and evenly seasoned.


Transfer the toasted bagel halves to a large plate, cut-side up.
Spread a generous layer of lemon cream cheese over the cut face of each bagel half.

Drape the smoked salmon in loose folds over the cream cheese on each bagel half.
